Cleaning Up the Mess...


So it is Monday, and that means it is time to Clean all the leftovers aka the mess from the week that was...


NFL NEWS:

- The Carolina Panthers suspended WR Steve Smith for 2 Games because of his fight with CB Ken Lucas during Training Camp

- Denver Broncos WR Brandon Marshall was suspended for 3 Games because of the league's personal conduct policy

- Ocho Cinco returned to full practice for th Bengals

- Brett Favre was reinstated!! ( a post to come on that subject)

- Packers RB Ryan Grant signed a 4-Year $30 Million Dollar deal

- The Redskins defeated the Colts 30-16 in the 2008 Hall of Fame Game

- Art Monk and Darrell Green were among inductees into the '08 Class


NBA NEWS:

- Sixers Guard Lou Williams resigned with the Sixers for 5 years and $25 million

- Ex-Magic Guard Carlos Arroyo went European and signed with an Israeli team

- Mavericks forward Josh Howard was arrested in a drag racing incident

- Luol Deng signed a 6 Year, $72-80 Million Dollar deal

- Disgraced referee Tim Donaghy was sentenced to 15 months in prison


MLB NEWS:

- The Trade Deadline came and went, check out the previous "Trader Rater" posts for all that dirt

- The Yankees signed P Victor Zambrano to a minor league deal

- 3B Eric Chavez is out for the season

- P Tim Hudson is also probably out for the season

- The Red Sox offered a minor league contract to P Joe Borowski
- Prince Fielder and Manny Parra got into a scuffle in the dugout which prompted a tag team match at Summerslam -- Prince Fielder & Ken Lucas versus Manny Parra & Steve Smith

- Philadelphia Phillies shipped SP Adam Eaton to the Minor Leagues

- The Dodgers acquired 3B/OF Casey Blake from the Cleveland Indians

- The Yankees acquired RP Damaso Marte and OF Xavier Nady from the Pirates for 4 Minor Leaguers

- RP Goose Gossage was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame

- The Indians acquired SP Anthony Reyes from the St. Louis Cardinals

- Manny Ramirez is about done with the Boston Red Sox

- Oakland A's reliever Brad Ziegler has thrown 27 consecutive scoreless innings to break a record that has stood since 1907

NFL NEWS:
- Ocho Cinco aka Chad Johnson arrived at Bengals Training Camp as expected

- Shawn Andrews has not appeared at Eagles camp just yet

- Devin Hester was rewarded with a 4 year 30 million dollar extension

- The Dallas Cowboys appear ready to cut WR Terry Glenn (UPDATE: Terry Glenn appears ready to sign with the Miami Dolphins)

- Rams RB Steven Jackson has been a no-show so far at team camp

- Rafael Nadal beat Nicolas Kiefer 6-3, 6-2 on Sunday to win the Rogers Cup, his fifth straight tournament victory.

- Matt D'Orazio threw seven touchdown passes and ran for another score to lead the Philadelphia Soul to their first ArenaBowl victory, beating defending AFL champion San Jose 59-56 on Sunday.

- Carlos Sastre has won the Tour de France in one of the closest finishes in the 105-year-old race. He is the third Spaniard in a row to win cycling's premier event.

Top 10: Sports Moments & Games from the First Half of 2008

Well it has been a while since we rolled out a new version of the Top 10. Now I know this is a bit overdue, but I have compiled a list of the top sporting moments and games from the first half of the 2008 season. I will be sure to complete this list when the end of the calendar year rolls around.

10. Ken Griffey Jr. hits his 600th career Home Run against the Florida Marlins


09. LSU defeated Ohio State in the BCS Championship Game to become the champion of college football.


08. Detroit Red Wings defeated the young guns of the Pittsburgh Penguins to become the Stanley Cup Champions


07. Fresno State in one of the greatest upsets in sports wins the College Baseball World Series


06. Brett Favre retires and cries during his press conference to assure everyone he is done for good...


05. Rafael Nadal defeated Roger Federer in the 2008 Wimbledon Final which could possibly signify a changing of the guard in the Tennis world


04. Tiger Woods defeated Rocco in a sudden death round of golf to win the 2008 US Open championship


03. Mario Chalmers hit a 3 to send the game into overtime as the Kansas Jayhawks defeated the Memphis Tigers to become college basketball champs


02. The Boston "Three" Party is able to reclaim basketball supremacy for at least a year in Beantown as the Celtics win the 2008 NBA Title.


01. The 18-0 New England Patriots were upset by the underdog New York Giants who won the 2008 Super Bowl in a game which could be symbolized by the catch of David Tyree

NFL NEWS:
- Former SD Chargers safety Terrence Kiel was involved in a terrible car accident and passed away Friday evening.
- "Inside the NFL" will be moved to Showtime and will be hosted by James Brown, Phil Simms, and Cris Collinsworth
- Dan Patrick will join the ever-growing crowd on the NBC Football coverage and will accompany Keith Olberman, Bob Costas, Jerome Bettis, and Tiki Barber among more!
- Imprisoned Michael Vick has filed for bankruptcy protection
- And YES, Brett Favre may unretire again, and for some reason I can care less every time this is brought up.
MLB NEWS:
- All Star teams were indeed announced with Clint Hurdle and Terry Francona as the team's managers. You can find the all-star rosters here: http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/events/all_star/y2008/roster_team.jsp
- The Brewers were able to acquire CC Sabathia from the Indians for 4 prospects including stud Matt LaPorta
- The Final Vote contestants for the All-Star games are: Aaron Rowand, Corey Hart, David Wright, Carlos Lee, and Pat Burrell for the NL and Jason Giambi, Evan Longoria, Jermaine Dye, Brian Roberts, and Jose Guillen for the AL (in which you can use the widget in the upper right hand corner to vote with)
- Home Run Derby Participants so far: Chase Utley, Grady Sizemore, Josh Hamilton, Dan Uggla, Lance Berkman, and Vladimir Guerrero
NBA NEWS:
- The Seattle Sonics will be relocated to Oklahoma City
- Baron Davis will sign with the Clippers
- Antawn Jamison and Gilbert Arenas will return to the Wiz
- Chris Duhon will sign the Knicks
- Vinny Del Negro added some experience to the bench, adding Del Harris and Bernie Bickerstaff as assistants

Cleaning Up the Mess


The post titled "cleaning up the mess" will be a new feature on the blog that will basically just recap all the big stories and stories you may has missed over the recent couple days. The post will be similar to a "quick hits" type of segment. I hope you all enjoy!

NBA News:

- Detroit Pistons have named Michael Curry their new head coach on a 3-year deal

- Phoenix Suns introduced former Bucks' coach Terry Porter as their new head coach

- According to sources, the Chicago Bulls have offered their coaching vacancy to Vinny Del Negro

- Gilbert Arenas opted out of his final year of his 6 year deal with Washington as expected.

NFL News:

- Lito Sheppard is still absent from Eagles OTAs and practice

- After his recent DUI, Cedric Benson was released by the Chicago Bears

- After 15 years and the recent Super Bowl victory, Giants' DE Michael Strahan will retire (interesting to not the possible Hall of Fame class of Favre, Strahan, and Warren Sapp)

NHL News:

- Detroit Red Wings goalie Dominic Hasek will retire and certainly will be a Hall of Famer

MLB News:

- Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 600th Home Run tonight in front of about 30 people in Florida

- Seattle Mariners fired their hitting coach (I expect more moves of the like to occur)

- Floyd Mayweather Jr. has apparently "retired" from Boxing

- Rafael Nadal won his 4th straight French Open

- Big Brown was unsuccessful in his bid to win the Triple Crown
