Cleaning up the Mess...
Let's break out the mop and broom and clean up some of these stories floating around in sports...
I'm just saying...
...Jose Canseco is a RAT...a pile of scum. The fact that he won't release who "Max" is, just means he is holding out for a third book to make more money. He has been right on some people in the Mithcell Report, but so far he has no evidence on A-Rod.
...A-Rod should just deny, deny, deny, and deny...unless of course Canseco is telling the truth.
...Chris Webber should not make the Hall of the Fame.
...The San Francisco Giants are doing the right thing by stripping their entire stadium of Barry Bonds-related items.
...Michael Beasely will be the number 1 pick in the 2008 NBA Draft.
...Chris Long will be the number 1 pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.
...Johan Santana will not win the NL Cy Young award.
...Brandon Webb will win the NL Cy Young award.
...Chris Paul should win the 2008 NBA MVP.
...Bobby Knight has been a likeable analyst on ESPN.
...MLB in Japan to open the season is an awful idea!
...Joba Chamberlain is overrated...already.
...The Rays will be a legitimate team this year, not a playoff team, but a 75 win team.

SOO SWEET 16!
Due to a Spring Break hiatus and vacay to Acapulco Mexico. I missed out on the opportunity to blog about the 2008 NCAA Tourney! Selection Sunday and the first round of the tourney easily rivals Super Bowl Sunday for me. The reason being, basically because it is one thing that actually lives up to the hype, unlike most Super Bowls. Perhaps advertisers should pay to run their ads during the tournament instead? I digress...on to the predictions!
(7) West Virginia vs. (3) Xavier
WVU has already done some work by eliminating the Dukies, in which I congratulate the Mountaineers. HOWEVER, I am an A-10 Guy (aside from my obvious Maryland ACC Bias) and I don't see the X men losing this one. Where did WV come from this season? Joe Alexander is a good Big East player, but Xavier has a balanced attack and may be the quietest #3 seed in a while.
Advantage - Xavier
(4) Washington State vs. (1) North Carolina
I don't think much needs to be said about this contest. UNC will most likely win this game by about 12-14 points. To be honest, I don't know much about Washington State, another under the radar team, who comes from the Pac10. WSU has some nice players and will probably keep it close in the 1st half, but in the end Ellington, Lawson, and Hansborough carry the Heels to the next round.
Advantage - UNC
(3) Louisville vs. (2) Tennessee
This should be the game of the night. Louisville has really put together a run in the second half of the season and ever since Pitino rocked that white suit in a white out game, the Cards are looking legit. One of my other favorite college coaches, Bruce Pearl is on the other sideline with a run and gun style offense and the Volunteers. There is some injury concern with Tennessee guard Chris Lofton and will need some solid play from forwards Wayne Chism and Tyler Smith. The Cards will rely on center David Padgett, but in the end I'm gonna volunteer (HA HA HA)to go with Bruce Pearl.
Advantage - Tennessee
(12) Western Kentucky vs. (1) UCLA
UCLA. 'nuff Said. I do not see an upset brewing in this matchup. I will give the Hilltoppers credit, they do have one of the best mascots in all of sports with big red. Love, Collison and Westbrook will all be to much for the 'Toppers.

NBA Contract Buyouts
There has been a new trend in the NBA over the last few years and it has been the "contract buyout". Let me begin by saying that I have a big gripe with this.
When has it become acceptable for a player to demand a buyout so he can go to a different team? When a player is under contract, they should have to fulfill their contract, no matter how crappy a team is!
For example, last season Chris Webber was disgruntled with the 76ers, negotiated a huge monetary buyout and one week later is playing on a championship contending team, the Detroit Pistons! Excuse me, but i don't care how much service time you have "C-Webb" or your desire to play for a contending team, but you fulfill your duties.
Several players have found themselves in a situation this season that has involved the buyout. Jamal Magloire (from NJ to Dallas), Brent Barry (Seattle to SA again), Flip Murray (Detroit to Indiana). However, the most notable situation has been SAM I AM CASSELL.
Cassell has been lobbying for a buyout for several weeks now so that he can sign with Boston to make another run at a championship. Cassell was satisfied when the Clips were making a playoff push 2 years, but since has soured on the team. I don't wanna hear that he is nearing the end of his career and wants to make another run at a ring with the PGA Tour (Pierce-Garnett-Allen), who also just signed PJ Brown for the stretch run, because he already has two rings from his early days with the Rockets!
Personally, I think the whole "buyout" phase needs to end soon, and the least thing a player can do is honor his contract.

NBA Trade Deadline
Well well well, I do apologize for the lag in posts, to many things going on right now, but no excuses and play like a champ!
Well the NBA Trade Deadline has passed and these past few weeks have been out of control in terms of the caliber of players that are being moved. Let's get a grading on the moves!
12/29: Utah traded Gordan Giriceck to Philadelphia for Kyle Korver
Well considering the fact that this was not technically a deadline deal, the Jazz are a ridiculous 19 and 3! The Jazz went from a playoff bubble spot to a solid 4 seed in the insane Western Conference right now. With one of the best point guards in the league now (yes, presently) Deron Williams and low post presence of all-star Carlos Boozer, and all the role players you could want this gave Utah the spot up 3 point threat they desperatly needed. The Sixers get an expiring contract at about 5 mil, which are always valuable in the NBA.
Utah Grade: B+
Sixers Grade: B
02/01: Memphis trades Pau Gasol, '10 2nd round pick to Lakers for Aaron Mckie, Javaris Crittenton, Kwame Brown and 2 1st round picks.
What?! Where did this trade come from?! And how did the Lakers STEAL Gasol from the Grizz?? Let's be honest they gave up two first round picks that will be in the 20's, no doubt, and the Lakers already have the young talent they need in Bynum, Farmar and Ariza to compliment Odom, Gasol, Fisher, and oh yes Kobe Bryant. The Lakers are 7 and 1 since the trade and are in a dead lock with the Suns for first in the division. Analysts are salivating over the thoughts of a frontline of Odom, Gasol, and Bynum. The key for the Lakers is the health of Bynum and Kobe, but as far as the trade...stunning.
Lakers Grade: A
Grizzlies Grade: D-
02/06: Phoenix trades Marcus Banks and Shawn Marion to Miami for Shaquille O'Neal
Some may say this was in reaction to rival Lakers move, some may say it wasn't. I say that this came out of nowhere as well and who knew that Shaq was on the trading block and that it was possible to move him because of his contract. Despite several people doubting this move, I do indeed like it. The Suns the past few years have had virtually the same team and it has not gotten them to the Finals. With Nash not getting any younger, I like the very risky move. Shaq could find new motivation and once he gets adapted to the system, it could be an entertaining squad to watch. I don't wanna hear that the Suns are a running team and Shaq will slow them down, because when was the last time you saw a 5 man fast break? Someone needs to rebound and outlet the ball, right? I also love this trade for Miami as well. I would take Wade and Marion as a duo any day with the odds on top 5 pick in the lottery this year. Even if Marion opts out, the Heat will have saved a ton of money on the Shaq deal.

02/16: Sacramento trades Mike Bibby to Atlanta for Shelden Williams, Tyronn Lue, Anthony Johnson, Lorenzen Wright and a 2nd round pick
Wow, the Atlanta Hawks in the playoff mix for the first time in a while make a move that will almost certainly get them into the playoffs. As long as Mike Bibby stays healthy, a lineup of Bibby, Joe Johnson, Josh Smith, Marvin Williams, and Al Horford sounds pretty good to me with Acie Law IV and Josh Childress off the bench. The Kings did not really receive much back other than the former number 5 pick Williams, who has been a bust so far. Maybe a change of scenary can revive his career?

02/19: Dallas trades Devin Harris, Trenton Hassell, Keith Van Horn, Maurice Ager, DeSagna Diop, 2 Picks, and Cash to New Jersey for Jason Kidd, Antoine Wright, and Malik Allen
I think this is a solid move for New Jersey as long as they keep overhauling the team and going for a youth movement. Richard Jefferson can still play, but I would look to move Vince Carter. The Nets have some talented young guys in Marcus Williams, Devin Harris, Shawn Williams, and Josh Boone. For Dallas, that was definitely a reaction to what has taken place in the West so far and they decided to give up a good amount of players for ex-Mav J. Kidd. This move is definitely for the present and while I think it will help the Mavs in the regular season, but in the postseason going against bigs like Duncan, Shaq, and Bynum, they may struggle.
Mavs Grade: B
Nets Grade: B+
02/21/08: 11 Player Trade ~ Cleveland receives Ben Wallace, Delonte West, Joe Smith, and Wally Szczerbiack. Chicago receives Shannon Brown, Cedric Simmons, Larry Hughes, and Drew Gooden. Seattle receives Ira Newble, Donyell Marshall, and Adrian Griffin.
Wow, what a way to end the trading season in the NBA than going out with an 11-players, 3-team deal gigantic deal. LBJ was upset because the Cavs missed out on Bibby and Kidd, but Cavs GM Danny Ferry was able to give Lebron a sniper from the outside (Wally), a young spot up shooting point guard (Delonte), a defensive role player with experience (Big Ben), and a role playing big man who can contribute (Joe Smith). I think it was a solid move for the Cavs and elevates them to Celtic/Piston land in the East. I am not really sure what the Bulls are doing now with a surplus at the guard position, Hughes/Gordon/Deng/Heinrich/Duhon/Thabo. I guess they are preparing for either Deng or Gordon to leave this offseason? For the Sonics, it's simple, they are looking for expiring contracts and salary dumps.

Sonics Grade: N/A

Just wanted to plug myself and my co-host real quickly.
The Steak, Crab & Curry Show will be returning Monday, February 4th with an additional hour this semester!
We have added a second hour and will now run from 4pm - 6pm on WMUC sports, a University of Maryland sports radio station.
We can be heard at www.wmucsports.com click "listen live" every Monday from 4 - 6pm.
This semester will see more debates and tenatively scheduled to appear are a few hosts from WNST 1570am Baltimore Sports.

2 Weeks of Hype!
Well here it is, the two weeks of hype leading up to Super Bowl 42 on February 3 in Arizona between the New York Giants and the New England Patriots. The Giants defeated the Green Bay Packers in an overtime game in the -4 degree weather in which Brett Favre can be held accountable for the loss. Favre threw an ill-advised pass that was intercepted by Webster and gave the Giants favorable field possession to win the game. I had almost certainly been convinced the Packers were the team of destiny here and were going to win the game. With all the magic Brett Favre had all season long and with the two missed field goals by Tynes (not to mention GB winning the overtime coin toss) it seemed to be Green Bay's Year. Eli Manning definitely stepped up and has been playing some good football lately to bring the Giants back to life. Plaxico Burress single-handily ripped apart Al Harris all game and Ahmad Bradshaw came out of nowhere to play a big role for the G-men. Winning 10 road games in a row, it seems as though the Giants have earned their position in Super Bowl and are not exactly unfamiliar with the Patriots. I should also point out in a previous post I did not give the Giants a chance to win the NFC, I'm just saying...
As for the opponent for the Giants, it is some team that has not lost a game yet but recently has come back down to Earth with the Eagles, Ravens, Giants, Jags, and Chargers all giving them pretty good games, the Patriots. MVP Tom Brady has especially looked human-like in the game against the Chargers where he threw for 3 interceptions (side note: Cromartie is good). Laurence Maroney had one hell of a game rushing for over 120 yards and helping the Pats salvage a shakey passing game. Where has Randy Moss been lately? Wes Welker is looking like the number one option on most plays. I do give props to Philip Rivers for having surgery prior to the game and still giving all he had for San Diego in a gutsy performance. (A second side note: I hope the Dolphins noticed that Wes Welker and Chris Chambers had some pretty decent performances in this game). The whole LT thing really baffled me for the fact that he was able to start the game and was not on the injured list but was pulled after a series. It was reported that it was Norv Turner's decision and if this is indeed true, this just exemplifies another reason why he should not be a head coach.
Personally, Two week is WAY to much time between the conference championships and the Super Bowl. Now I know it all has to do with money, commercialization, and the media, but seriously if your team is not in the Super Bowl by Wednesday of the first week you can't even turn on Sportscenter for more than 3 minutes without hearing some back lifestory of the 3rd string Offensive lineman who walked on at some small college.
It did not even take a day before the first ridiculous storyline came out for this year's Super Bowl. I'm sure you all know that I am referring to the continuing coverage of Tom Brady and "BOOTGATE". (Incase you are living under a rock and haven't heard about this then peep this, http://link.brightcove.com/services/link/bcpid285859616/bclid294430730/bctid1386375873). It's really a shame when ESPN and all the media is stooping to this level and to treat Tom Brady like he is Britney Spears being carried away on a stretcher. Maybe I should just sit back and get a good laugh at all the ridiculous stories that come out during this two week period? By the way did you that Jerome Bettis is from Detroit?!

I did enjoy the matchup of Plax vs. AL-HA throughout the game with Burress doing some serious work. As a former Eagle, and not a very good one, I never understood the hype that Harris received for being so good because he got torched all game and it did end up being one of the key matchups of the game, although an uneven one in the end. Eli definitely had some really good performances these playoffs and once again it's a showdown between Brady and Manning (Eli). I am not to sure if the doubters will be silenced just yet for two reasons. (1) He plays in New York, just ask Randy Johnson, Jason Giambi, A-Rod, Tiki, Stephon Marbury, etc. etc. about the mental fatigue the city puts on you. No matter what he does it will most likely not be enough. (2) He is the younger brother of Peyton who has already won a super bowl now and been successful for years. Both Mannings will always be compared with each other especially in how they fare against Brady. If Eli pulls off the upset he will definitely have earned some of the doubters to be silenced, but who knows with New York. I guess you could say it's better that Eli is always under the microscope in NY because he could be Chad Pennington on the lowly Jets where no one really gives two hoots about them anymore. NFC CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP
NFC CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP:
NEW YORK GIANTS (12-6) V. GREEN BAY PACKERS (14-3)
INITIAL THOUGHT: With the temperature at gametime projecting to be about 0 degrees with a wind chill of -25 degrees, it could be an interesting game to watch and it is the way playoff football should be played.
SECOND THOUGHT: With how cold it is going to be, the game should be focused on the running games of Brandon Jacobs and Ryan Grant, but it would not surprise me if Brett Favre has another magical game and throws for a couple of touchdowns.
X-FACTOR: As mentioned earlier, the x-factors for each team will be the running backs, Jacobs and Grant. Whichever team can run the ball more effectively should be in a pretty good position to win this game. With Grant's performance last week and the size of Jacobs, I think both running backs should have strong games.
KEY MATCHUP: Eli Manning versus the secondary of the Packers. Which persona of Eli will show up for the game? Al Harris has elevated his game to be one of the best corners in the league and the matchup of Al-Ha and Plaxico Burress should also be something to watch.
PREDICTION: Packers - 31 Giants - 24
FINAL THOUGHT: I am still not a true believer in Tom Coughlin, but he has certainly earned himself a contract extention because of his improvements coaching and with the team. The Giants have just as good a chance to win this game, (even though I have countlessly written them off...my bad), but something about Favre getting another shot at the Super Bowl seems fitting.

Ok, so I had to take a break from the conference championship preview to congratulate the Maryland Terps (my school) on defeating the #1 Undefeated North Carolina Tar Heels AT Chapel Hill. Go figure, a team that loses to Ohio U. and American U. at home can go on the road and beat an unbeaten #1 ranked squad. This definitely gave some hope to the Terps' tournament chances.
